At SLAVA Ukrainian Cultural Centre, we offer Ukrainian Character Dance classes for children from 2½ years old through to adults. Our classes provide a joyful and energetic way to connect with Ukrainian culture while developing coordination, strength, and confidence.
Ukrainian Dance is an energetic, entertaining, and vibrant art form that reflects the rich traditions of Ukraine’s many cultural regions — each with its own distinct dance style, music, and colourful costumes.
The athletic men’s movements and acrobatic tricks are inspired by Hopak, a traditional Ukrainian martial art dating back to the 13th century. The women’s choreography combines grace, elegance, and intricate footwork, often highlighted by rapid spins, twirls, and expressive gestures.
Ukrainian dance is closely tied to the nation’s history, echoing ancient rituals and village traditions. Each movement tells a story of resilience, community, and pride, uniting people of all ages and preserving cultural identity.
Originating from folk traditions and influenced by elements of classical, character, and contemporary dance, SLAVA has proudly developed its own signature style within the genre of Ukrainian dance.
Ukrainian dance costumes are more than decoration — they show region, tradition, and character. Embroidered shirts, bright skirts, belts, and boots create a strong stage image. Colors and patterns often carry symbols of family, nature, and national pride.
